A wall-mounted home charger needs a driveway, garage or private parking bay within cable reach, since regulations don’t allow a charging cable to trail across a public pavement. That’s straightforward on a semi in the outer boroughs, less so on a terrace without a front garden, which is common closer to central London.
If you don’t have off-street parking, some councils are rolling out on-street residential chargepoints through the government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure fund. We’ll tell you honestly at enquiry stage whether your property is a fit for a home charger or whether an on-street option is the more realistic route.
Charging around your tariff, not just your panels.
A smart charger can be scheduled to draw from the grid during a cheaper overnight window on a time-of-use tariff, on top of prioritising your own solar generation during the day. The two work together rather than being an either-or choice.
Do I need off-street parking?
Yes, for a standard wall-mounted charger you need a driveway or private parking space within cable reach of the unit. We confirm cable run and mounting position at survey.
Are electric vehicles exempt from ULEZ and the Congestion Charge?
Yes, fully electric vehicles are currently exempt from both charges. Transport for London has consulted on changes to how the capital charges drivers in future, so it’s worth checking current rules for your vehicle before relying on this long-term.
Is there a grant available?
Flat owner-occupiers and renters with private off-street parking can currently claim up to £500 towards a chargepoint through the government’s EV chargepoint grant. Eligibility and amounts can change, so we confirm what applies at the time of your quote.
What’s involved in the installation?
An electrician runs a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to the charge point, usually completed within a day. We check your existing electrics can safely support the new circuit before quoting.
